Giant to Buy 16 Genuardi’s as Safeway Exits Philly

CARLISLE, Pa. — Giant Food Stores here Thursday agreed to purchase 16 Genuardi’s stores from rival Safeway for $106 million, a move that will further grow Giant’s rapidly expanding share of the Philadelphia market and could spell the end of the 92-year-old Genuardi’s banner.

Safeway summarily said it intended to exit the Philadelphia market, closing three Genuardi stores not in the deal and looking to sell the remaining eight stores that Giant did not purchase.

SN in October had reported that Giant, a division of Amsterdam-based Ahold, was a likely buyer for the Genuardi stores.

“Giant is always looking for convenient locations to better serve our customers,” Rick Herring, president of Giant, said in a statement. “We are very excited to have the opportunity to expand our presence in greater Philadelphia and serve new customers.”

Giant has grown rapidly into the Philadelphia region in recent years, beginning with the purchase of 13 former Clemens Markets stores in 2006. The Genuardi’s stores it is purchasing represent some of that chain’s top locations north and west of the city, sources said.

I have worked for Genuardis at the Wynnewood Store #3038 In Wynnewood Pa for the last 8 years. I work behind Customer Service, I the customers and have great repor with all of them. I feel that I do more than just help the customers as I have many other duties while working there. I handle all the money that comes in and goes out on a daily basis, make sure inventory works out each night handle lottery machines, money orders. western unions, and many more things to many to mention. I love working with the public and was wondering how you would be determing who would get interview to stay at Giant and who would have to leave the store. One great advantage I do have since the 8 years I have worked there since I live three steps away, the Geneuards in Wynnewood never failed to open. I know things are way up in the air but again, Love mu job and would have to think of going to look for a new one is very scary.
Thanks for taking the the time to read this and I will Look to be hearing from your as soon as things settle. I am a great bookkeeper and very honest person. Beverly Politz Kazman

Who are the likely suitors for the 11 remaining stores? Is A&P under Burkle likely to expand its presence in its Philadelphia market post-bankruptcy?

I hope Beverly Politz Kazman is still empolyed at the Wynnewood store. She is an asset to the store and neighborhood. I also hope your bakery and catering is as superior as Genuardi's.

I worked for Genuardis as a cake decorator the Phoenixille location. I really enjoyed the company but i felt that as it got closer and closer to the "Rumors" starting of them being sold, i knew it was going to happen. When it was a family owned company things yes I'm sure were much different, but it was owned by safeway, a company that didn't have munch interest in the philadelphia area anyway. So its seems to me, why wouldn't Giant by them out?? I have been to many different Giants in the lancaster region and i think they are great places, and they offer wonderful sales, and savings. They have a beautiful bakery and most of the options you would find in a Genuardis are also available there. Its no longer about a family business and hasn't been since it was bought out by safeway, and it seems logic for another corporate company to take over. I think that giant will have great success with the closed Genuardis store and i look forward to reading about it.
