JENKINTOWN, Pa. -- Acme Markets has introduced a range of food-service operations new to the company in a superstore that opened here June 27.
The store's food-service options include a sushi bar, a "European-style" cafe serving cappuccino, bagels and pizza, and a separate coffee bar.
The day before the store opened, an associate working in the store said the menu at the cafe had not yet been set for opening day.
The Jenkintown Acme Food & Drug Superstore is at least the second in the format the company has opened this year. Recently, Acme Markets, Malvern, Pa., a division of American Stores Co., Salt Lake City, opened a superstore in Voorhees, N.J., but that store does not serve sushi or have a coffee bar or a cafe, according to a store associate there. A slightly older superstore operating in Woodbury, N.J., does not have food-service operations either.
"We do have a coffee machine, though," said a Woodbury store associate.
The Jenkintown Acme also includes a department with the company's home-meal replacement prepared-foods concept, "Meals in Minutes." The store is also equipped with a floral department and full-time designer, and Acme Flower Line, a toll-free flowers-by-wire service.
Officials at Acme Markets and parent company American Stores did not return calls seeking comment about the new store.
