McLEAN, Va. -- The American Frozen Food Institute here criticized the United Nations' World Health Organization for encouraging the consumption of fresh produce without mentioning the role of frozens.

In a report issued last month, the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer cautioned against the use of dietary supplements for cancer prevention and stressed the role of fresh fruits and vegetables as the body's first line of defense in disease prevention.

"Consumers throughout the world should know that frozen fruits and vegetables are many more times nutritious than fresh products," asserted Steven C. Anderson, the AFFI's president.

Anderson referred to recent studies that show frozen produce may actually contain more nutrients than raw produce, when the latter has been held for several days in the supermarket or home refrigerator.
