Dupont Brands Soy Offerings

gies International business has branded its soy protein ingredients under the name Solae.

DuPont says Solae gives marketers the opportunity to align their existing brands with a "simple promise: great taste and real health benefits in everyday, convenient foods."

"There's a lot of information in the marketplace about soy protein. We want to differentiate ourselves with a brand consumers can trust and know that our soy ingredients are providing the health benefits they expect," said J. Erik Fyrwald, vice president and general manager, DuPont Nutrition and Health, Wilmington, Del.

The first product to carry the Solae mark is 8th Continent soy milk, which recently began hitting U.S. dairy cases in the Northeast, in mid-Atlantic regions and on the West Coast. The soy milk is the first product from a joint venture between DuPont and General Mills.

Meat, dairy, baked goods, cereals, healthful beverages and snack foods are among other categories that may use the Solae brand.

The Campbell Soup Co. will promote its affiliation with the XIX Olympic Winter Games in February 2002 in advertising, at the point-of-purchase and on individual cans of Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup.

"This is a great example of Campbell putting our marketing effort behind exciting initiatives that connect with our consumers," said Douglas Conant, president and chief executive officer, Campbell, Camden, N.J.

As an official supplier to the games, Campbell also has pledged to generate $500,000 in funding to the U.S. Olympic Team via consumer purchases of specially labeled cans. The money will be used by the U.S. Olympic Team for everyday training needs, including coaching, lodging and meals at training centers.

In addition to its soup products, Campbell will provide its Franco-America Pasta and Gravy, and Pace Salsa and Picante sauces at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.

Task Force Targets Snack Business

General Mills, Nabisco and Procter & Gamble Co. are among the manufacturers participating in a task force aimed at improving efficiencies in the warehouse-delivered snack and candy supply chain. Retailers and wholesalers are also involved.

Composed of several members of the Grocery Manufacturers of America, National Association of Convenience Stores and American Wholesale Marketers Association, the task force will look at how to increase profitability, meet consumer demand and maximize the snack category's performance in convenience stores.

"With the unique distribution needs of the convenience store channel and changing consumer dynamics, we believe there are strong opportunities to promote the growth potential of warehouse-delivered snacks," said Mark Baum, executive vice president of GMA, Washington.

The task force will examine how warehouse-delivered snack products help deliver value to retailers, conduct benchmarking and research studies on supply chain improvement, and examine new consumer demographics impacting sales in convenience stores.
