BOISE, Idaho -- Albertson's here rolled out its Preferred Savings Card to its Intermountain Region late last month, following the debut of the cards at 100 Albertson's stores last year in the Dallas area.

time Albertson's had ever offered the cards at its namesake chain.

The company had said it would eye the implementation of the card program on a division-by-division basis, but some industry observers have speculated that Albertson's would eventually offer the cards throughout the country.

"I wouldn't be surprised to see them roll it out to 100% of Albertson's," said Barry Kotek, managing partner, Retail Systems Consulting, Naples, Fla.

In the Intermountain Region, which includes Montana, Utah, and parts of Wyoming, Nevada, Idaho and Oregon, Albertson's currently competes with chains such as Kroger's Smith's Food & Drug Stores, which has offered its "Fresh Values" card since 1997.
