TARGET: PINOT GRIGIO WINE CUBE
inot Grigio Wine Cube don't ever have to worry about finding pieces of cork in their glass again.
Launched on Oct. 5, 2003, the wine cube is being positioned as a premium alternative to competing boxed wines, which are popping up with more frequency throughout the industry. Billed as being convenient, portable and easy to use, the item is being positioned by Target as a premium addition to the the current boxed wine segment.
"It has enough style like [the housewares line by] Michael Graves to be appealing, and it certainly plays to the people who go to Target who want a big bang for their buck," said Joanna Pruess, author, food writer and PLMA judge. "It was cheap, the flavor was right, and it was a good product."
The retailer offers three other private-label wine cube varietals, including Chardonnay, Shiraz and Merlot. They can all be found with the regular bottled wine assortment in Target stores.
This particular product took about six to nine months to develop and was designed to address the consumer need for convenience, according to Target employees. In-store tastings accompanied its rollout where legal. The three-liter box sells for $15.99 and contains the amount of four bottles of wine. It is guaranteed to stay fresh for up to six weeks.
Company executives told SN the company plans to expand on this idea with similar products in the future.
ALDI: KLASSIEK BEER
Klassiek was one of the first three private-label beer offerings on Aldi shelves and the entire process of formula development, package design, beer production and shipment into the U.S. took about five months to complete.
The taste of the beer was designed to replicate other imported beers from Holland. Each six-pack of 12-ounce bottles sells for $5.99, while other imports from Holland typically sell for between $7.99 and $8.49 in traditional retail outlets, according to Aldi executives. A crest from Holland is prominent on all packaging and the back label includes details of the beer's history and brew process. Cases of Klassiek, which house four, six-packs, feature a perforation that allows the case to be opened while displaying the six packs inside.
