AMERICAN STORES SALES UP, PROFIT DOWN IN 4TH QUARTER

SALT LAKE CITY -- American Stores Co. here said sales rose 10.9% for the quarter but slipped 0.3% for the year.

Operating income increased 10.9% to $252.3 million for the quarter and 8.7% to $706.8 million for the year. Profits amounted to 5% of quarterly sales compared with 4.9% in the year-ago period, and 3.9% of annual sales compared with 3.5%.

The fourth quarter included sales and earnings for 14 weeks, compared with 13 weeks in fiscal 1995; the year included sales for 53 weeks, compared with 52 weeks last year.
