WASHINGTON (FNS) -- Grocery retail sales figures slipped slightly last month, but analysts said the 0.1% decline from December in seasonally adjusted dollars was probably due to the weather. According to Commerce Department figures released last week, grocery store sales hit $33.8 billion in January.
ales rose a moderate 0.6% in January to $209 billion, a 4.9% increase over the same month last year.
Cody S. McGarraugh, an analyst with Scott & Stringfellow in Richmond, Va., said the changes in the grocery and food-store sales figure were primarily weather-related.
