MONTVALE, N.J. -- The Canadian division of A&P here said last week it will convert seven units of The Barn Fruit Markets in southern Ontario to franchise units during the next 12 months.

ada already operate as franchised units.

The Barn stores, which A&P acquired late last month, average 30,000 square feet and, despite their name, offer a complete line of groceries along with a strong emphasis on produce.

A&P said the acquired company's management team will remain in place to oversee the original seven stores plus all units franchised under The Barn banner.

According to Earl Near, vice chairman and chief financial officer of A&P Canada, "This acquisition will result in a unique one-stop shopping experience that truly delivers the quality and freshness of a specialty market with the selection and value of a large grocery chain."

Company officials said The Barn will now have access to a much wider choice of national and store-brand groceries, as well as the resources to grow in the marketplace.
