ARDEN PROFIT CLIMBS 6% IN 2ND PERIOD

LOS ANGELES -- Arden Group here said net income increased 5.6% to $1.7 million in the second quarter ended July 2.

Results for the quarter and the 26-week period included eight weeks of sales from GPS Pool Supply, a swimming-pool chemical processing and distribution subsidiary that was sold May 27 for approximately $3.5 million.

Excluding GPS operations, sales for the 12 supermarkets rose 2.4% to $59.4 million in the second quarter and 3.7% to $120.2 million in the first half.

The sale resulted in a pretax gain, net of related expenses, of $93,000, the company said.
