DETROIT (FNS) -- Hygrade Foods has expanded its Ball Park line of franks with the introduction of an individually wrapped, self-venting microwaveable hot dog.

line at Hygrade's Philadelphia plant.

Each hot dog is wrapped in clear film. The perforation between each frank allows consumers to pull apart and use as many hot dogs as they need. An easy-peel feature makes the package safe to open right out of the microwave. Step-by-step cooking instructions are on the carton.

"Ball Park Singles have been researched with consumers over the past two years and response to single-serve hot dogs has been tremendous," said Earnestine Benford, director of new business development. "We believe this is one of the biggest innovations to ever hit the hot dog industry."

"We expect this concept to change how consumers purchase and prepare hot dogs," said Deborah Sabo, group category manager for Ball Park. "The introduction of Ball Park Singles will attract new hot dog consumers."

The singles will be sold in regular and beef varieties in eight-count, 12.8-oz. boxes. Per-unit pricing is the same as for regular Ball Park Franks.

The introduction is being supported with $13 million in marketing support. Ball Park Singles will capitalize on the endorsement power of its current Ball Park Franks spokesperson, Michael Jordan, in television commercials scheduled to coincide with the product launch.
