I have been in this business for 39 years and the attitude towards nonfood by operations people is the same today as it was when I first started. I am always amazed that operations almost never takes a positive look at the total picture. It always puts grocery first and generally what space is left goes to nonfood. In new store layouts, retailers should focus on integrating nonfood categories with grocery categories, as we all know that most shoppers have no nonfood items on their shopping list, except health and beauty care. Thus, you must rely on presentation to create impulse.
