Supermarket dog food sales are being siphoned off to other classes of trade, including mass merchandisers and pet food supermarkets, despite a proliferation of nutritional dog food varieties and high-margin dog treats. Dollar sales figures provided by Information Resources Inc., Chicago, for the 52-week period ended Oct. 9, 1994, show supermarket dog food sales to be flat or declining in key categories.
