Two national brands account for more than half the business in creamy peanut butter throughout the country and in Chicago, where Brand Marketing checked prices at three competing supermarkets. Nationally, Procter & Gamble's Jif holds a strong lead over Skippy, from the Best Foods division of CPC International. In Chicago, however, Skippy just edges out Jif. Private label finishes in third place locally and around the country. Not suprisingly, Omni Superstore -- the warehouse format of Dominick's -- offered the sharpest prices, including its Heritage House brand at two for $3.

BrandMarketing conducted these price checks on Aug. 29, at the following supermarkets in the Chicago marketplace: Dominick's Finer Foods, 3350 N. Western Ave.; Jewel Food Stores, 3400 N. Western Ave.; Omni Superstore, 2550 Fullerton Ave.
