The top-three brands of canned ground coffee in St. Louis surged in dollar sales in the last year, while the fourth, fifth and sixth brands plunged. Sales of Procter & Gamble's Folgers and Kraft Foods' Maxwell House percolated by 10.9% and 37.2%, respectively. Hills Bros. from Nestle Beverage Co. increased 16.7%. Meanwhile, the next three brands declined: regional brand Safari (- 22.9%), private label (- 25.1%) and Maxwell House Master Blend (- 26.6%). There was virtual uniform pricing for the top-three brands at two of the supermarkets visited by Brand Marketing. The exception was Hills Bros., which Schnuck TPR-priced at $2.99 from its regular and locally popular $3.39 per can. Meanwhile, the low-price leader was Shop-N-Save, a unit operated by wholesaler Supervalu.
BrandMarketing conducted these price checks on Tuesday, April 9, at the following supermarkets in the St. Charles section of Greater St. Louis: Dierbergs, 2021 Zumbehl Road; Shop-N-Save, 30 Harvester Square; Schnuck, 1950 Zumbehl Road.
