BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Bruno's here is giving its customers a little help with their diets through a recipe evaluation program and by putting an accent on "healthy" products in its advertising.

l items in our stores. We have also implemented our new 'Bruno's Recipe Right' program where we will analyze your favorite family recipe for its nutritional value."

The ad also listed sale prices for a dozen "healthy" products, including light or reduced-fat Hellmann's mayonnaise, reduced-fat Skippy peanut butter, Healthy Choice spaghetti sauce and light corn oil Mazola spread.

Officials at Bruno's would not comment on the promotion of the healthy products; nor would they comment on the Recipe Right program.

However, a store-level source said Recipe Right is a promotion being done in conjunction with Auburn University. "You send in your favorite recipe and Auburn University analyzes it for nutritional value," she said. There is no charge to customers, she said, adding that the program started in late October and is expected to run through Christmas. A local industry observer said Bruno's was smart to highlight low-fat foods.

"It's a great move in terms of public relations. Right in their ad they're saying they care about the health of their customers," he said. "Then they're showing their customers what foods they can eat to improve their diets."
