BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Bruno's here said it has agreed to sell or close 35 stores throughout its marketing area in a move the company said puts it in a stronger financial and operational position.

If Bruno's is unable to find buyers for the 10 stores, they will be closed, the company said.
With the sale and potential closures, Bruno's will operate 164 stores in Alabama, Mississippi, Florida and Georgia. The stores Albertson's has agreed to acquire include 11 in Nashville (including one that was just built but remains unopened); three in Chattanooga; and one in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., which is adjacent to Chattanooga -- all new marketing areas for Albertson's.
