BUTTREY VOLUME DECLINES IN FOURTH QUARTER

GREAT FALLS, Mont. -- Buttrey Food & Drug Stores Co. here said sales for the 13-week fourth quarter ended Feb. 1, 1997 decreased 2.2%, to $96.2 million, from $98.3 million for the 14-week fourth quarter ended Feb. 3, 1996.

for the 13 weeks ended Jan. 27, 1996.

Excluding the 14th week, comparable-store sales increased 1.1% despite a more aggressive competitive environment, the shortened holiday selling period and the severity of this year's winter weather, the company said.

Sales for the 52 weeks ended Feb. 1, 1997 increased $3.2 million, or 0.9%, to $371.3 million, from $368.1 million, for the 53 weeks ended Feb. 3, 1996.

Excluding sales for the 53rd week in the prior fiscal year, sales for the 52 weeks ended Feb. 1, 1997 increased 2.6%, to $371.3 million, compared with $361.8 million for the 52 weeks ended Jan. 27, 1996. Excluding the 53rd week, comparable-store sales increased 0.6%.
