SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The California Independent Grocers Association here said Scott Hair, owner of Green Frog Markets, Bakersfield, Calif., will begin a one-year term as chairman of the board Sunday.

Hair succeeds Bob Spengler, president and chief operating officer of Save Mart Supermarkets, Modesto, who will serve on CIGA's executive committee as immediate past chairman.

According to Hair, "We will continue to promote the independent sector of California's grocery industry and prepare our members to become activists in their local communities. More than ever before, we must keep informed of local land use and zoning issues as they pertain to our industry, and we must focus on improving communications with city and county governments."

Other new members of CIGA's board are Del Clegg, Cookie Crock Market, Cambria, as first vice chairman; Louis Young, Payless Markets, Lockeford, as second vice chairman and treasurer; and Jim Pallios, Richland Markets, Ceres, as third vice chairman and assistant treasurer.

CIGA said Troy Cochran, Valley IGA, Waterford, is joining the board as a new retail member, and Arline Mello, of Nu Cal Eggs, is joining as a new vendor member. Joe Falvey, president of the Northern California division of Unified Western Grocers, Los Angeles, will become board member emeritus.
