CALIFORNIA WINE ON STEADY GROWTH PATTERN

SAN FRANCISCO -- The California wine industry has grown nearly 40% between 1998 and 2002, and now has an impact of more than $45 billion on the state's economy, according to a new report issued by MKF Research, St. Helena, Calif., for a meeting here of California wine producers. The industry produces the No. 1 finished agricultural product in the state, and employs more than 200,000 people. The research also found that California is the fourth-largest wine-producing entity in the world, behind the countries of France, Italy and Spain. It accounted for $643 million in wine exports in 2003, up from $537 million five years prior.
