ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Carr Gottstein Foods has cut a 4-foot baby toy section into its baby health and beauty care department at three stores. It has plans to go chainwide with the concept.

"Putting baby and infant toys into baby HBC has increased exposure and generated plus sales for these toys," said Gary Schloss, vice president of general merchandise. As a result of this move, sales of baby toys, which have been merchandised in the toy department, jumped 20%.

The toy sets consist of 25 stockkeeping units with Fisher Price and Playskool items priced between $3.99 and $9.99. The boxed products, merchandised on shelves, include baby blocks, telephones and other toys. The selection is targeted to infants up to one year old.

"Young mothers and grandmothers are picking these toys up on impulse as they shop for formula and diapers," Schloss said. Carr Gottstein set the toy sections at the three stores in April, and plans to set the remainder of its stores by the fall. Until volume from the baby HBC area builds to higher levels, the retailer will continue to carry these toys in its regular 40- to 60-foot toy departments as well.
