Total category dollar sales for food, drug and mass grew 16.51% to $1.7 billion in dollar sales for the 52 weeks ended June 13.
In the food channel, sales of cold/allergy/sinus products grew 9.74% during the same period to $667.3 million in sales. Sales in the drug channel grew 22.47% to bring channel dollar sales to $918.4 million.
Historically, the channel spiked even higher in 2003: Sales in the food channel were up 25.35% for the calendar year, after declining 4.76% in 2002. Drug sales were up 46.57% for 2003. In 2002, sales in the drug channel were up marginally, just over 1%, while food, drug and mass combined sales declined 1.71%.
