pick up diapers, they're no longer primary destinations since price-conscious parents flock to mass merchandisers and warehouse clubs. Specialty stores also have become formidable competitors, using diapers, wipes and food to draw customers in to buy toys, equipment and clothing. The sizable share commanded by private-label diapers and wipes further supports shoppers' price sensitivity.

It should be noted, however, that all channels in the IRI survey experienced sales declines for the 52 weeks ending June 13. Food/drug/mass sales fell nearly 6% to approximately $2.4 billion. Specifically, supermarket sales dropped nearly 7% to $1.4 billion; drug stores fell nearly 8% to $370 million.

The supermarket channel has been losing sales for the entire IRI survey period. In calendar year 2003, sales fell 7.6% to $1.4 billion, and nearly 11% in 2002, to about $1.6 billion in sales. While drug store sales were up 4.7% in 2002, on sales of $404 million, they, too, declined the next year by just over 4%, to $387 million.
