Over the same period, the food, drug and mass channels experienced a 0.3% drop in sales, to just over $8 billion. Different segments of the category were hit harder than others, though most felt the blow. Hardest hit was the huge $5.84 billion fresh breads category, which saw sales fall 0.7% in the three channels. Bagels and bialys experienced a small increase, 0.3%, as did fresh rolls, buns and croissants, up 0.7%.
Drug was the only channel to consistently build sales the past two years, jumping 6% in the latest 52 weeks ending June 13. However, the channel remains small, with only $40.7 million in sales during that period.
