Consumption of margarine has been declining in the United States for about 10 years. Most recently, unit sales were down 5.2% in 2002 and 6.2% in 2003. Concerns raised by the medical community over trans fatty acids have eroded the low-cholesterol health message of many brands in the category, while the low-carb craze has more recently helped remove the stigma associated with the fat content of butter.
