price swings, milk sales were up 3.3%, to $10.3 billion for the 52 weeks ended June 13.

Total U.S.consumption of milk has been flat or up slightly in each of the past three years, according to U.S. Department of agriculture statistics. However, the rapid rise of single-serve and flavored single-serve milks may be playing a role in growing the category. That segment is enjoying its strongest perfromance in the convenience and drug channels. Though a small piece of the category, refrigerated milk shakes (a part of the single-serve segment tracked separately by IRI) grew more than 42.6% during the period, to $50 million in supermarket channel sales.

At supermarkets, the real category excitement has been generated by soy milk and milk substitues, such as Keifir, which grew 20.3% last year, to $335 million. The drug channel enjoyed a 19% bounce in milk sales, highlighting the channel's growing appeal as a fill-in destination and its ability to merchandise a larger selection of single-serve milk products.
