CHERRY HILL, N.J. -- Some things in life are free -- like a child's first birthday cake.
.-based Wakefern Food Corp. The seven-unit retailer operates stores under the banner of ShopRite and Talk of the Town. The free cake program was launched recently in its three ShopRite units that have in-store bakeries.
In those stores, a sign and a banner proclaim, "Your child's first birthday cake free."
Officials at Supermarkets of Cherry Hill could not be reached for comment, but a local source told SN that 24 hours' notice is required to get one of the decorated cakes. And the child's birth certificate must be shown when the cake is picked up.
The 8-inch, two-layer cakes are available in chocolate or vanilla with vanilla icing, with decorations in pink or blue. A source at one of the store's bakeries told SN the cakes retail for $9.99.
