eegee's Helps Handicapped
TUCSON, Ariz. -- eegee's deli restaurants here has opened a new unit that is specifically designed to train developmentally disabled people in the food business, according to Ed Irving, founder and president of the 20-store chain.
The restaurant is staffed by existing eegee's employees, as well as eligible trainees, and is expected to accommodate 20 developmentally disabled adults every year. The initiative is part of a recently formed public-private partnership between the chain, the State of Arizona Rehabilitative Services Administration and the Beacon Foundation, which offers vocational training for developmentally disabled adults.
According to Irving, the idea sprouted as a way to help reduce the high employee-turnover rate in the retail food industry.
