SHELTON, Conn. -- Country Home Bakers has moved its headquarters to a newly built facility here that increases its capabilities for customer training and provides more space for research and development, officials said.

tion out of that plant will be transferred to Country Home's facilities in Atlanta.

In a related move, the manufacturer of frozen bakery products will invest $18 million to expand and modernize its manufacturing facilities in Atlanta and Torrance, Calif. The project will double production capacity at Atlanta and boost it 40% at the California facility.

"We feel that in the new headquarters, our efficiency and focus on customer service will be improved. Plant changes should result in greater efficiencies and consistently high-quality products which in the long term will mean better prices for our customers, too," said Judith Borck, Country Home's president and chief executive officer.

The new building here houses a modern research and development lab and training facilities for both employees and customers.

Explaining the Bridgeport plant closing, Borck said, "The plant's age, layout and location meant high operating costs and an inability to expand and modernize."

She emphasized the plant's closing will not affect Country Home's customers.

Borck explained that most of the company's products are already made in Atlanta and Torrance and that products earmarked for Northeast customers will continue to be processed through a Northeast distribution center.
