Industry leaders, retail merchandisers, growers and packers each view the produce-related category as instrumental to building department sales. However, the lines are often blurred within the category. Retailers say that the following subcategories form a firm foundation from which to build sales:
eport that adjacent cross merchandising is the most beneficial when moving these items: refrigerated salad dressings, croutons, drink mixes, guacamole mix, sunflower kernels, glazes, caramel wraps.
* Nonedible items. These items are usually general merchandise in nature, and retailers report that when they are tossed into the produce mix for a limited amount of time they spur sales: french fry makers, juicers, utensils -- scoops, spoons, peelers, brushes -- and corn, mushroom and banana keepers, and storage containers.
