Bill McCanless, president and chief executive officer, said the company plans to "enhance the communication of" its price positioning in the next few weeks.
"In spite of a challenging sales environment during the first quarter, the company's strong cost-control programs, coupled with an improved product mix, produced increased profits," he noted.
The company said it expects to complete by late June its acquisition of Hannaford Bros. Co., Scarborough, Maine, pending completion of regulatory filings.
