Schwegmann Taps Pack for President

Pack succeeds Mark S. Sellers, who continues as chief executive officer and chief financial officer of the 26-store chain. Schwegmann is owned by Kohlberg & Co., Mount Kisco, N.Y. Pack, 47, was chairman of Southwest Supermarkets, Phoenix, which is also owned by Kohlberg. He left that post earlier this year to concentrate full time on potential acquisitions and expansion opportunities for Kohlberg. He spent four months here as a consultant to Schwegmann before taking the title of president.

Thriftway Creates Marketing Position

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Thriftway Stores here has hired Tim Turner as marketing director.

In his new position, Turner manages store development and strategic marketing for the Thriftway group -- 43 independently owned stores in Oregon and southwest Washington that advertise collectively and are supplied by United Grocers here.

Turner joins the Thriftway organization from Excell Foods, a 22-store cooperative that operates under URM, a wholesale grocery distributor based in Spokane, Wash. At Excell he was executive director.

Prior to working at Excell, Turner spent three years as an account representative for Georgia-Pacific. Before that position, he was with Albertson's, Boise, Idaho, where he worked his way up from a clerk to grocery manager over the course of 10 years.

Turner reports to Paula Anctil, corporate vice president of United Grocers, and Bob Komlofske, who was elected chairman of Thriftway at the company's most recent board meeting. Komlofske, owner of two Thriftway stores, has been a board member three times over the past 15 years and has chaired the board twice before. As chairman, he succeeds Ken Findley, who is now chairman emeritus.

Thriftway also appointed two board members: Lee Sheffield, a single-store owner and previous board chair, and Craig Danielson, a five-store operator and a previous board member.

Ralphs Appoints Carhill VP

COMPTON, Calif. -- Ralphs Grocery Co. here said Norm Carhill has been named vice president of retail merchandising for the 342-store chain.

He succeeds Mike Frank, who has left Ralphs to become senior vice president of sales and merchandising for Rainbow Foods, Hopkins, Minn., a division of Fleming Cos., Oklahoma City. Carhill, 42, was director of store operations administration for Ralphs. In his new post he is responsible for retail merchandising and space allocation at the company's 262 conventional Ralphs stores and its 80 Food 4 Less warehouse stores.

Carhill reports to Frank Lazaran, group vice president for sales and merchandising.

Carhill's successor, John Goetze, a former assistant district manager, has taken over as director of store operations administration for Ralphs. Goetze reports to Dave Hansen, senior vice president of store operations for the Ralphs division.
