Nash Finch Names Bishop, Richards

here has named two former Scrivner executives to its corporate ranks.

William T. Bishop, former Scrivner president and chief operating officer, has joined Nash Finch as senior vice president of sales and logistics, a new position. Bishop had been president of Scrivner since 1987.

He is now responsible for operations of Nash Finch's three Midwest divisions and its affiliated independent stores, as well as warehousing and transportation functions. He reports to Alfred N. Flaten, Nash Finch president and chief executive officer.

David J. Richards has joined Nash Finch as vice president of its Southeast division. He was senior vice president of store development for Scrivner.

In his new position, Richards oversees distribution operations in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia. He also reports to Flaten.

Richards succeeds Joseph M. Bentler, who was named vice president of the Iowa division.

In other changes, David W. Bell was chosen to fill the new position of senior vice president of retail sales and operations, reporting to Flaten.

He was vice president of corporate retail operations but his duties were expanded to include all marketing, store development, real estate, engineering and market research functions, as well as corporate retail operations.

Charles M. Sieler, former vice president of the Iowa division, has been named to Bell's old post. He reports to Bell.

Smart & Final Taps Unit Chief

VERNON, Calif. -- Smart & Final here has named James Griffin to the new post of chief operating officer of its American Foodservice Distributors subsidiary.

Griffin, formerly a corporate senior vice president, was also named executive vice president of the parent company.

American Foodservice Distributors includes Port Stockton Food Distributors, Stockton, Calif., and Henry Lee Co., Miami.

As chief operating officer, Griffin will oversee the opening of a new Port Stockton warehouse in March or April that will supply Smart & Final retail stores as well as food-service customers in northern California. He will also oversee the retrofitting of the Henry Lee facility to accommodate the Smart & Final stores the company will begin opening in Florida next fall.

John Goneau, president and chief operating officer of Port Stockton, and Edward Sternlieb, president of Henry Lee, will report to Griffin.

At the corporate level, Griffin will continue to have responsibility for buying, merchandising, distribution and information systems development for the 147-store chain.

He reports to Roger M. Laverty 3rd, chairman and chief executive officer.

Kelly Becomes VP at D&W

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- D&W Food Centers here has named Beth Kelly vice president of human resources.

She is responsible for attracting and retaining employees, compensation planning and developing employee programs. She reports to Doug Blease, executive vice president.

Kelly succeeds Todd Buzzell, who left the company.

Before joining D&W, Kelly was vice president of human resources at Cascade Engineering, here.

Tony Jones has been appointed director of training at D&W, a new position.

He is responsible for developing and implementing training programs for employees, creating training materials and building and managing the training department. He reports to Kelly.

Jones most recently was supermarket management training instructor at Supervalu University, Minneapolis.
