has named J. Wayne Harris senior vice president and chief operating officer of U.S. operations, a new position.

Harris will oversee all of the company's U.S. operating groups and subsidiaries. He will report to Christian Haub, president and chief operating officer of A&P.

Harris has held a number of positions at the company since joining it in 1992. He most recently was senior vice president and chairman of A&P's Central Islip, N.Y.-based Waldbaum's subsidiary.

Winn-Dixie Names Thriftway Retail Head

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Winn-Dixie here has named Jim Schlosser to the newly-created position of retail operations superintendent of Thriftway stores, Cincinnati.

Schlosser will be responsible for sales, profits, controllable expenses and all daily operations at the 25-store Thriftway chain, which Winn-Dixie acquired in March.

He reports to Dan Lafever, president of Winn-Dixie's Midwest Division, Louisville, Ky.

Schlosser had been with Thriftway since 1967 in a variety of posts and most recently was director of produce there.

Winn-Dixie also named Kenneth Johnston grocery category sales manager for Winn-Dixie Louisville.

Four Re-elected to Fleming Board

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Fleming Cos. here said four directors were re-elected at its annual meeting here this month.

Robert E. Stauth, Fleming's chairman, president and chief executive officer, was elected to a three-year term. Stauth has been a member of the board since 1993.

Archie R. Dykes, chairman and CEO of Capital City Holdings, was elected to a three-year term. Dykes has been on Fleming's board since 1981.

John A. McMillan, co-chairman of Nordstrom, was elected to a three-year term. McMillan has been a Fleming board member since 1992.

Guy A. Osborn, chairman and CEO of Universal Foods Corp., was elected to a two-year term. Osborn has been a Fleming director since 1992.

Food Lion's LeClercq Retires

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Food Lion here said Jacques LeClercq has retired from its board of directors after a 21-year tenure.

LeClercq was chairman of the board's audit and stock option committees and was a member of the finance, senior management compensation, nominating and executive committees. He remains a director of Delhaize, the Belgian supermarket chain that owns Food Lion.

Philippe Stroobant has been selected to fill LeClercq's Food Lion board slot. Stroobant was elected to a one-year term at the company's annual shareholders meeting here earlier this month. He is currently an executive vice president, director and member of the management committee of Delhaize.

Food Lion shareholders also re-elected nine other directors to one-year terms, including Tom E. Smith, the company's chairman, president and chief executive officer.

Haggerty Joins NAWGA as VP

FALLS CHURCH, Va. -- The National-American Wholesale Grocers' Association here has named Pat Haggerty to the new title of vice president of communications and marketing.

Haggerty oversees all NAWGA communications and marketing functions -- the first time the organization has formally combined those responsibilities.

He replaces Christopher Galen, who resigned as NAWGA's director of communications in March for a position as account supervisor in the Washington office of Ketchum Public Relations.

Haggerty, 46, most recently was a public speaker lecturing on the inner workings of Washington. During his career, he has also worked as a Congressional press secretary, Washington journalist and an official with several trade associations. He reports to John Block, NAWGA president and chief executive officer.
