ires as its first woman to lead an Albertson's division. Spires became president, a new position, of the Rocky Mountain division last week. She will have profit-and-loss responsibility for this division, which encompasses Colorado, South Dakota and parts of Wyoming and Nebraska.

Brian Murty, formerly the vice president for the Rocky Mountain division, will become vice president of operations for the division, working with Spires.

Prior to her promotion, Spires served most recently as senior vice president, marketing. She joined Acme Markets, an Albertson's subsidiary in the Northeast, in 1970 and held a number of retail operations positions, including vice president of administration, vice president of human resources, and vice president of operations.

In addition, Acme Markets, Malvern, Pa., has promoted Anthony Frederico to vice president of operations for the Eastern division of the subsidiary. Frederico will assume responsibility for the day-to-day operations of 61 stores in New Jersey and 10 stores in Bucks County, Pa.

Frederico previously served in a variety of positions for Acme, most recently as district sales manager for the last eight years. Prior to that, he held a variety of positions with the company, including manager for grocery and general merchandise, store director and part-time clerk.

Stop & Shop names Hippler General Counsel

QUINCY, Mass. -- Tom Hippler has been named senior vice president and general counsel of Stop & Shop here. He succeeds David Kramer, who has left the company to pursue other opportunities.

Prior to his promotion, Hippler, who joined Stop & Shop two years ago, served as vice president of real-estate law.
