The Grand Union Co., WAYNE, N.J., said last week Robert Smith has been named corporate vice president, merchandising. Previously, Smith served as senior vice president, store operations for Vons, the Arcadia, Calif.-based division of Safeway, Pleasanton, Calif.
Albertson's, Boise Idaho, said last week it promoted Mike McCarthy to group vice president, distribution, administration and integration. McCarthy has spent more than 30 years with Albertson's, with the last 26 in administrative positions in distribution operations.
Schultz Sav-O Stores, Sheboygan, Wis., said it has named Elwood F. Winn executive vice president, chief financial officer and secretary and a member of the company's board. Winn has served as senior vice president, strategic planning, since joining the company last September.
He succeeds John H. Dahly, who will not be retiring, as previously announced. Instead, Dahly will retain his title of executive vice president and serve as executive sponsor of the company's ongoing business systems project; he will also assist retail operations in the recruitment of new franchise operators and continue to provide business planning guidance for existing franchise operators.
Schultz also said Michael R. Houser, formerly executive vice president, marketing and merchandising, has been named to the newly created position of executive vice president, chief marketing officer. In addition, Mary E. McLaughlin, formerly director of grocery procurement operations, has been named director of grocery procurement and category management. She succeeds John S. Kwas, vice president, grocery procurement, who retired from the company earlier this month after 43 years.
