Patrick Kiernan, senior vice president for industry relations and productivity, has been named senior vice president for strategic and emerging issues. In this new position, he focuses efforts on strategic planning and the identification of emerging industry issues. He continues to report to C. Manly Molpus, president and chief executive officer of the GMA. Bill James, senior director of industry relations and education, has been appointed vice president of industry affairs, a new position. He assumes additional responsibilities for overseeing the operations of the Industry Affairs Group. He reports to Kiernan.

VP of Sales Named At AG New England

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Associated Grocers of New England here said Mike Bourgoine has been named vice president of sales, a position made vacant by the retirement of Robert Bancroft. Bourgoine reports to Norman J. Turcotte, president.

In his 25-year food-industry career, Bourgoine has held several executive-level positions with Wetterau, including president and general manager of Cressey Dockham & Co., a $350 million division of Wetterau. He was also a partner in the Farm Fare Supermarket company, which ultimately grew to 12 stores.

Development Post Created by Spartan

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Spartan Stores here said Jim Swoboda has been named to the new position of director of strategic business development. Swoboda reports to Kevin Schlosser, vice president of sales.

By creating this new post, Spartan said, it is supporting its corporate objectives of growth, customer success and centralization. Swoboda is now investigating new opportunities for Spartan Stores to increase sales through new markets. He is also helping retail customers develop strategies to make them more successful and he is also helping to coordinate and facilitate across departments many of Spartan's future growth strategies, working closely with the officers of the company.

Spartan also said Brian DiVita has been named marketing research manager, a new position. DiVita joined the company in 1995 as a marketing research specialist and most recently was marketing research supervisor. He reports to Sally Lake, director of marketing.

In his new position, DiVita is accountable for managing the marketing research department to expand research activity with existing customers and nontraditional sources of business opportunity, and supporting corporate project needs.

Spartan also elected four board members. Three returning members are: Glen A. Catt, president and chief executive officer of Glen's Markets, Gaylord, Mich.; Parker T. Feldpausch, president of G&R Felpausch Co., Hastings, Mich.; and James B. Meyer, Spartan's president and CEO. Dorothy A. Johnson, president of the Council of Michigan Foundations, was newly elected to the board.

Spartan services 450 independent supermarkets in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio.
