Franklin has been responsible for the two regions, which encompass seven divisions, since 1992, when Supervalu acquired Wetterau, Hazelwood, Mo. Franklin joined Wetterau in 1963 and held the title of senior vice president of the food distribution group for the Central region at the time the company was acquired.

Safeway Taps Pak 'N Save Manager

FREMONT, Calif. -- George Arias has been named general manager of the Pak 'N Save division of Safeway, Oakland, Calif. He succeeds Frank Burger, who has left the company. Arias was a district manager for Safeway. In his new position he will oversee the 16 Pak 'N Save warehouse stores and report to John Cartales, senior vice president of Safeway's northern California division. A Safeway spokeswoman told SN the reporting lines for Pak 'N Save remain unchanged, and the stores are continuing to operate independently of Safeway, as they always have.

Senior VP Appointed at Vons

ARCADIA, Calif. -- Vons Cos. here has named Donald J. Howard senior vice president of real estate and construction, a new position.

Responsibilities for real estate previously were handled by a senior vice president of real estate and a vice president of construction. Both of those positions had been vacant.

Howard was manager of real estate development for Ralphs Grocery Co., Compton, Calif. At Vons he will report to Mike Henn, executive vice president of finance and administration.

In another change, Mary M. Kasper has been named to the new position of senior counsel for Vons.

Kasper was assistant counsel. In her new position, she will concentrate on real estate-related legal matters, including negotiating and drafting leases, purchase agreements, reciprocal easement agreements and development agreements relating to acquisitions, development and maintenance of Vons properties.

Kasper will report to Terrence J. Wallock, executive vice president and general counsel.

Albrecht Names Retail Analyst

AKRON, Ohio -- Fred W. Albrecht Grocery Co. here has named Linda Doerr to the new position of staff retail analyst. Doerr formerly worked in accounting and financial analysis for Bridgestone Firestone Co. At Albrecht she will work in the sales, merchandising and purchasing group, focusing on the development, maintenance and analysis of financial information systems that support the company's retail operations. She also will be involved in documenting current purchasing and merchandising policies and procedures as a means of supporting the company's analysis of new integrated merchandising systems. Doerr will report to Sam Stites, senior vice president of sales and marketing. Albrecht operates 11 Acme Markets, eight Acme SuperCenters and 14 Y-Mart discount stores in Ohio.

Hammett Takes Bozzuto's Post

CHESHIRE, Conn. -- Bozzuto's here has named Ed Hammett director of human resources.

The position had been vacant for about a year.

Hammett was director of human resources for Sweet Life Foods, Suffield, Conn., which was recently acquired by Supervalu, Minneapolis. He will report to Tom Zatina, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Bozzuto's.

In his new position, Hammett is responsible for the administration and implementation of corporate human resource activities, as well as the design and development of human resource services for the company's retail customers.
