kets here announced the appointment of James Brabson as vice president of store operations, a new post. Brabson joined Ingles in 1972 and was most recently district manager of the North Atlanta district.

The company also said Tom Outlaw has been appointed vice president of grocery sales, also a new post. Outlaw joined the company in 1971 and was most recently vice president of frozen foods.

Both report to Vaughn C. Fisher, president and chief operating officer at Ingles Markets. Ingles Markets operates 191 supermarkets and 74 neighborhood shopping centers, all but three of which contain an Ingles store.

Chairman Leaves Southwest

PHOENIX -- Southwest Supermarkets here said Jim Pack has relinquished his duties as chairman of the board to concentrate full time on potential acquisitions and expansion opportunities with Kohlberg & Co., the owner of Southwest. Pack remains on the board of managers for Southwest and Schwegmann Giant Super Markets, also owned by Kohlberg.

The company also announced that Jerry Miller, vice president and chief operating officer, has resigned to pursue personal ventures. The company has begun a search for a new chief operating officer. Southwest Supermarkets has 37 stores in the Southwestern United States, which cater predominantly to the Hispanic community.

Sentry Taps New Chairman

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Sentry Supermarkets here has named Skip Hauke chairman of the board. Hauke, owner of Hauke's Sentry and Bayside Sentry in Astoria, Ore., was vice chairman in 1996. His family has been in the food retailing industry for 100 years.

Doug Schmidt, owner of Erikson's Sentry in Bend, Ore., was named vice chairman. Schmidt was a board member last year.

Two new Sentry board members were elected to three-year terms: Allen Mancasola, co-owner of Farmer's Sentry supermarkets in Shasta Lake and Magalia, Calif.; and Allen Miller, owner of JC Sentry, Toledo, Ore.

The 30 Sentry Supermarkets in Oregon, Washington and California are independently owned and are serviced by United Grocers, Portland, Ore.

AWMA Adds Marketing VP

WASHINGTON -- V. Brett Melvin has been named vice president of marketing at the American Wholesale Marketers Association here. In this new position, Melvin is responsible for trade relations and association marketing. He reports to David E. Strachan, president and chief executive officer of the association.

Prior to his current post, Melvin spent nearly seven years as vice president of member/industry relations at the National Association of Convenience Stores, acting as the primary liaison between the association and its associate/supplier members. Most recently, he was a consultant specializing in association management.

The AWMA also said Nancy Chill, formerly director of member services, will join the newly established marketing department as director of marketing. She reports to Melvin.
