Weis Names Two Co-Chairmen
arkets here last week created co-chairmen positions on its board of directors and named a new president to oversee day-to-day operations of the company, effective immediately.
Sigfried Weis, who was the company's president, and Robert F. Weis were named co-chairmen of the 147-store chain. Robert Weis was vice president and treasurer. He will retain the latter office, Weis said in a statement. Sigfried and Robert Weis are cousins.
Previously, Weis operated without a chairman of the board.
Additionally, Norman S. Rich was named president and given responsibility for day-to-day operations. Rich most recently was executive vice president. He began his career with the company as director of quality control and has held several positions.
The company said "these changes represented a natural evolution of the management of the company in recognition of the jobs being performed by each of these executives."
Rich told SN no other changes were made in the company's management last week. He said it was "too early to say" whether he would make operational changes as president of the company.
Weis Markets historically has been one of the most profitable supermarket chains in the industry, with a net-profit margin exceeding 5% of sales. The company operates stores in six states, primarily in eastern and central Pennsylvania.
Ohio Grocers Appoints Pletz
COLOMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Grocers Association here has named Barbara Pletz director of public affairs. She succeeds Andrew Bussard, who has left the association.
Pletz previously was public information officer for Ohio Northern University. She reports to Thomas S. Jackson, president and chief executive officer.
