NASH FINCH NAMES HANLEY TO RETAIL FORMAT POST

MINNEAPOLIS — Food wholesaler Nash Finch Co. last week said it has named Dennis Hanley to the new position of vice president of retail format development. He will report to Alec Covington, president and chief executive officer. Hanley will be responsible for developing and implementing new store formats for both corporate-owned stores and independent retail customers. Prior to joining Nash Finch, Hanley was a vice president at Giant-Carlisle/Tops, and before that he held leadership positions at Winn-Dixie, Woolworth's New Zealand and Farm Fresh.

JACKSON TO JOIN SAFEWAY AS SENIOR VP OF HR

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Russell M. Jackson will join Safeway as senior vice president, human resources, effective April 1. He will succeed Dick W. Gonzales, who retired at the end of last year. Jackson comes to Safeway from a 27-year career at PG&E Corp., where he most recently served as senior vice president of human resources. He holds an MBA from St. Mary's College, a master's in human resources and organizational development from the University of San Francisco, and a certificate in human resources management from the University of California at Berkeley.

GOLD NAMED VP OF LEGAL AFFAIRS AT BIG Y FOODS

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The board of directors of Big Y Foods has appointed Michael S. Gold vice president of legal affairs and government relations, a new position. As general counsel of Big Y, he will provide advice and counsel on all legal matters, including regulatory and compliance issues, and oversee government affairs. He will also assume responsibility for Big Y's risk management and food safety departments. He will report to Charles D'Amour, president and chief operating officer. Most recently, Gold was a principal in The Danali Group, a consulting firm, and he also previously served as vice president and general counsel for Shaw's Supermarkets.

GMA/FPA APPOINTS BEIZER VP OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

WASHINGTON — Emily S. Beizer has been named vice president of international affairs for the Grocery Manufacturers/Food Products Association. Before joining GMA/FPA, Beizer served as senior policy advisor, government and global trade, for Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw, Washington, where she provided government affairs and policy consulting in international trade, market access, intellectual property, agriculture, financial services, media and energy policy. Beizer previously served as assistant U.S. trade representative for congressional affairs in the Executive Office of the President's Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. Beizer will spearhead GMA/FPA efforts related to international business, trade and a regulatory agenda.
