Supervalu Names Two Senior VPs

ere has named Gregory C. Heying and H.S. "Skip" Smith corporate senior vice presidents.

Heying and Smith both had been corporate vice presidents at Supervalu.

Heying, who was corporate vice president of distribution, has been named senior vice president of distribution. From December 1992 until June of this year, he also was executive vice president of human resources and administration at Wetterau, Hazelwood, Mo., which Supervalu acquired in mid-1992. Heying initially joined Supervalu in 1976 and held personnel and distribution positions at the company's Fort Wayne, Ind.; Fargo, N.D., and Bismarck, N.D., divisions between 1976 and 1981.

Heying continues to report to Laurence Anderson, corporate executive vice president and regional president of wholesale foods.

Smith, corporate vice president of information services, has been named senior vice president of information services. He joined the company in 1978 as director of food systems and later became director of information services.

Smith continues to report to Jeff Girard, executive vice president and chief financial officer.

Fleming Vice Chairman Resigns

OKLAHOMA CITY -- R. Randolph Devening has resigned as vice chairman of Fleming Cos. here.

Devening said he and Robert E. Stauth, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Fleming, had been discussing a transition for him to leave the company for the past nine months and now that the acquisition of Scrivner has been completed, the timing was right.

"The company's in good shape," he said last week. "Bob has my absolute and unqualified support." He said there was "no personality clash" between him and Stauth.

Devening said he has accepted a position with a food-industry supplier company, but the formal announcement of that position has not been made yet. He declined to name the company.

Devening also had the title of chief financial officer until May, when Fleming named Harry L. Winn executive vice president and chief financial officer. Devening became vice chairman of Fleming in March 1993 at the same time Stauth was named president and chief operating officer. In October of last year, Stauth added the chief executive officer title. He became chairman this April.

Vons' William Bailey Accepts New Post

ARCADIA -- Vons Cos. here has named William D. Bailey vice president of labor and employment counsel.

Bailey was vice president of labor relations and human resources at Acme Markets, Malvern, Pa. Acme is a division of American Stores Co., Salt Lake City. Prior to joining Acme, Bailey had been director of labor relations for Vons from 1986 through 1989.

At Vons, Bailey is responsible for development of labor-relations strategies, contract negotiations and ongoing union contract management. He also will act as counsel for labor law and employment issues.

Vons said Bailey's new position combines responsibilities for human relations and labor relations and is a more senior post than it had been.

Bailey reports to Terry Wallock, executive vice president, general counsel and secretary of Vons which operates 344 stores in southern California and Nevada.
