AWG Makes Staff Additions

Mike Sweatt and Lorri Putnam have joined Associated Wholesale Grocers here.

Sweatt was named AWG's vice president of store engineering. In the newly created position, he oversees the store engineering and design services departments.

Putnam was appointed to manager of consumer research, a newly created position. She also serves on the consumer research committee for the Food Marketing Institute, Washington.

Both Sweatt and Putnam report to Scott Wilmoski, vice president of real estate and store engineering at AWG.

Sweatt joins AWG from H.E. Butt Grocery Co., San Antonio, where he served as director of facilities planning, design and purchasing. Putnam joins AWG from Associated Grocers, Seattle, where she held a similar position to her new one at AWG.

Certified Adds Training Director

LOS ANGELES -- Deena Chapman has been named director of organizational development and training at Certified Grocers of California, a cooperative wholesaler here. The title is a new one, although some of the job's responsibilities were formerly held by John Maloney, Certified's training manager, who has retired. Chapman reports to Margaret Huebner, vice president of human resources and labor relations.

Chapman will be an internal consultant to all the company's organizational units for various development and training needs, responsible for conducting needs assessments and surveys, selecting external trainers, developing and selecting training materials and engaging in classroom training as well as individual and group coaching. She formerly was manager of installation training and total quality management at Health Data Sciences Corp., Redlands, Calif.

Russo's Names Three to Board

CHESTERLAND, Ohio -- Sal Anthony Russo has been elected president of Russo's Stop-N-Shop board of directors here.

Sal Vincent Russo and Chad Pearce joined the board as vice presidents.

The appointments reflect the board's desire to let a younger generation take over the 64-year-old family business, the company reported.

The company also has hired Kathryn Lowe for the newly created position of director of marketing and public relations. She will oversee public relations for the company's four Cleveland-area stores. She reports to Sal Anthony Russo.

Lowe joined the company from West Point Market in Akron, Ohio, where she served as director of public relations.

Piggly Wiggly Appoints Chaplain

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The owner of three Piggly Wiggly stores was elected chaplain of the 1996-1997 National Piggly Wiggly Operators Association here.

Bill Koch, who operates stores in Chillicothe, Warrensburg, and Sweet Springs, Mo., will work with the other association officers and represent Piggly Wiggly franchisees during meetings with officials at the Piggly Wiggly Co. here.

Once elected chaplain, association officers later move through the ranks until they serve as president, the National Piggly Wiggly Operators Association reported.

With Koch's election to chaplain, officers moving up to new positions were Marc Mayeux, to president; Syrol McLain, to first vice president; Andy Marshall, to second vice president; and Gene Wade, to secretary-treasurer.

There are approximately 780 Piggly Wiggly stores in 19 states. The National Piggly Wiggly Operators Association held its annual convention earlier this summer in Orlando, Fla., drawing more than 1,500 attendees, a spokeswoman said.
