Randalls Brings in 3 At Senior VP Level

e has brought in three new executives at the senior vice president level to help manage future growth. It has reassigned a fourth senior vice president.

Tom Arledge has been named senior vice president of operations for Randalls Food and Pharmacy, a new position. He was senior vice president of marketing with Scrivner, an Oklahoma City-based food distribution company acquired by Fleming Cos., Oklahoma City, last month. Arledge also held various management positions with Tom Thumb, a 54-store Dallas-based chain that Randalls owns.

Arledge's position at Randalls includes some responsibilities previously held by Joe Livorsi, who was senior vice president of sales and operations. Livorsi has been named senior vice president of sales and merchandising.

Arledge oversees division and store operations. He reports to Randall Onstead, president and chief operating officer. Michael M. Calbert has been named senior vice president and corporate controller for development, a new position. Calbert will oversee special projects and accounting. He reports to Bob Gowens, executive vice president and chief financial officer.

Calbert was manager of the operational consulting practice for Arthur Andersen & Co. in San Antonio. He has more than 12 years of finance experience and has specialized in transaction processing for the retail grocery industry.

Lee Strauss has been named senior vice president, secretary-treasurer, a new position. He was president of Texas Commerce Mortgage Co.

Strauss is responsible for financial matters. He also reports to Gowens.

Randalls Food Markets operates 123 supermarkets -- under the Randalls and Tom Thumb banners -- in the Houston, Austin and Dallas-Fort Worth markets.

Hughes Appoints Merchandising VP

IRWINDALE, Calif. -- Hughes Family Markets here has named Michael W. Shultz senior vice president for sales and merchandising.

Shultz succeeds Harland Polk, who is retiring after 37 years with the company. Polk's title was senior vice president, sales and merchandising.

Shultz, who joined Hughes in 1981, most recently was vice president of purchasing. His new responsibilities include all retail product procurement, marketing, merchandising and sales.

He reports to Michael J. Solem, executive vice president.

Hughes Markets is a privately owned 52-store supermarket chain operating in the southern California counties of Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Ventura and Riverside.

Whole Foods Adds 8th Director

AUSTIN, Texas -- Whole Foods Market here, a leading natural-foods retailer, has named Avram Goldberg to its board.

With the addition of Goldberg, Whole Foods' board comprises eight directors. Goldberg is chairman of Avcar Group, a Boston-based consulting firm, according to Whole Foods.
