He is responsible for coordinating and directing the total core marketing plan for all ShopRite supermarkets, including sales programs and profit budgets. He reports to William Crombie, vice president of corporate merchandising.

Sharkey joined Wakefern in 1977 as a warehouse supervisor and has held various positions at the company. He most recently was frozen food procurement manager.

He succeeds Ray Rollison, who left the company.

Wakefern is a retailer-owned cooperative and the wholesale merchandising arm for ShopRite supermarkets in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Delaware.

Senior VP Appointed at Abco

PHOENIX -- Abco Foods here has named David Goodrich senior vice president of operations.

He succeeds Sal Sepulveda, who recently retired. Goodrich had been district manager at the company since 1986. He reports to Ed Hill, president and chief executive officer.

Goodrich's former post has been filled by Ty Burns. Burns has been with the company for 16 years, most recently as a store manager. He reports to Goodrich.

Abco operates 71 stores in the Tucson and Phoenix markets.

AWG Names Division Managers

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Associated Wholesale Grocers here has named a management team for its new Oklahoma City division. The division was created following the wholesaler's recent purchase of Homeland Stores, Oklahoma City.

Jerry Garland was named senior vice president and division manager. He reports to Mike DeFabis, president and chief executive officer of AWG.

Garland was vice president of merchandising and marketing at AWG's Springfield, Mo., division since he joined the group in 1991.

Mike Rand was named vice president of distribution. He reports to Garland.

Rand started his career at AWG in 1980 as division accountant in the Springfield division. He most recently was director of warehousing there.

Ron Doyle was named executive director of member services. He, too, reports to Garland.

Doyle joined the wholesaler in 1988 as manager of retail services at the Kansas City division here. He most recently was manager of retail operations at the division.

Argyll Executive Director to Retire

LONDON (FNS) -- Argyll Group here said Patrick Kieran will retire as executive director at the end of the year.

Kieran, also managing director of Argyll's Safeway Stores unit here, will retire from that post as well, the company said.

In advance of Kieran's planned retirement, Argyll appointed him deputy chairman of Safeway, a new position.

In his new post, Kieran will focus on the company's Safeway 2000 campaign to prepare the chain for the next century, the company said. Kieran has been with the company for 40 years. He reports to Colin Smith, Safeway's chairman and chief executive.

Argyll said Smith will assume most of Kieran's operational responsibilities following Kieran's retirement.

Food Brokers Add Education Slot

RESTON, Va. -- The National Food Brokers Association here has named Evelyn E. Aponte-Sacks director of education for the NFBA Education & Training Foundation, a new position.

Aponte-Sacks was most recently a financial planner for New York Life, but she has 14 years experience in the health and beauty care category.

She reports to Karen J. Ribler, executive vice president of the foundation.
