senior vice president and chief executive officer of United Supermarkets here has announced that Gary Crawford will join the company's leadership team as director of nonfood. Crawford will report to Ken Melville, vice president and chief operating officer.

Crawford most recently served as vice president of nonfood for Houston-based Randall's Food Markets. He has worked in the retail-grocery and drug-store industries for 24 years.

In his new position, Crawford will be responsible for directing all aspects of the company's health and beauty care, general-merchandise and nonfood departments.

Crawford was also recently appointed to the board of directors of the Colorado Springs, Colo.-based General Merchandise Distributors Council.

Moore said Crawford will "bring tremendous experience to [this] position and will help us achieve the goals of our strategic growth plan and better serve our communities in the years to come."

Crawford succeeds Steve Paul, who left the company.

DesignWare Adds Sales Manager

CLEVELAND -- John C. Garrison has been appointed sales manager for DesignWare, an American Greetings subsidiary that produces party goods and accessories.

In his new role, Garrison is responsible for initiating leads and coordinating sales. He works with retailers to maximize space allocated to DesignWare products and to increase channels of distribution. In this position, Garrison reports to Peter Fahrenkopf, executive director.

Fahrenkopf welcomed Garrison, and said that his "proven sales management experience and knowledge of the party goods industry will be instrumental in moving DesignWare forward."
