Scharn, with the company for 36 years, has agreed to serve as a part-time consultant, if and when requested.

Robert Stiles, vice president and general manager of Gelson's, has been elected by the board of directors to succeed Scharn as president. Stiles is a 35-year veteran of Gelson's and a longtime member of its management team.

AG New England Adds Aubin

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Associated Grocers of New England here has named Don Aubin director of advertising, a new position.

Aubin, who joined the wholesaler in 1975 after a long retail career, reports to Richard Ennis, executive vice president and chief financial officer.

In his new job, Aubin supervises all advertising and merchandising programs at AG New England, which supports its retail food stores with an advertising program that includes newspaper ads, flier and insert design and production, and merchandising aids.

FMI Resets Board of Directors

WASHINGTON -- Thirteen new directors have joined the board of the Food Marketing Institute here.

The new directors are William J. Bolton of Bruno's, Birmingham, Ala.; Charles C. Butt of H.E. Butt Grocery Co., San Antonio; Philip L. Francis of Shaw's Supermarkets, East Bridgewater, Mass.; Howard M. Jenkins of Publix Super Markets, Lakeland, Fla.; Alfred A. Marasca of Ralphs Grocery Co., Compton, Calif.; Jenai Sullivan Wall of Foodland Super Market, Honolulu; James T. McCoy of John C. Groub Co., Seymour, Ind.; Dan Kourkoumelis of Quality Food Centers, Bellevue, Wash.; Boyd L. George of Alex Lee, Hickory, N.C.; Terrance M. Rockstad of Dan's Super Market, Bismarck, N.D.; Dennis Garrett of Gene's Thriftway, Sabetha, Kan.; Marie K. Aarthun of Knowlan's Super Markets, Vadnais Heights, Minn., and Michel Deroy of Docks de France, Tours Cedex, France.

Also, five officers and 16 directors have been re-elected to the FMI board. Robert E. Bartels, president of Martin's Super Markets, South Bend, Ind., has been re-elected chairman. Re-elected vice chairmen were W.R. "Bill" MacAloney of Jax Markets, Anaheim, Calif.; Gary G. Michael of Albertson's, Boise, Idaho; Ronald D. Pearson of Hy-Vee, West Des Moines, Iowa; and Joseph A. Pichler of Kroger Co., Cincinnati.

Eagle Names Slate of Executives

MILAN, Ill. -- Eagle Food Centers here has promoted one executive and hired two others for new positions.

Ken Hanne has been named vice president of food service, a new position. He is responsible for in-store bakeries and service delicatessens. The job, which combines two previous positions, had been vacant for several months. Reporting to Dave Norton, senior vice president of retailing, Hanne formerly was regional perishable merchandising operations manager with Target Stores, Minneapolis. Archie Hollins has been named vice president of support systems, a new position. He is responsible for overseeing Eagle's warehouse and distribution systems. Previously vice president of transportation operations for Jewel Cos., Melrose Park, Ill., Hollins reports to Bob Kelley, Eagle's president and chief executive officer.

John Turley, who has been vice president of grocery procurement and merchandising, adds responsibilities for health and beauty care under the title vice president, grocery and HBC procurement and merchandising. In taking over HBC duties, he succeeds Ron Boger, who has left the company. Turley also reports to Norton.
