President Named at Handy Andy
tores here has named Mike Crain president of Handy Andy Supermarkets, San Antonio.
Crain succeeds Thomas Remy, who has resigned, Megafoods said. Handy Andy is a subsidiary of Megafoods.
Crain had been vice president of marketing and procurement for the 34-unit Handy Andy chain and has 16 years of experience with the retailer. He reports to Dean Miller, Megafoods' president and chief executive officer.
Ken Murphy succeeds Crain as vice president of marketing and procurement. Murphy was director of buying for Handy Andy and retains those responsibilities in his new position. Murphy reports to Crain.
In another change, Megafoods said its reduced emphasis on expansion has led to the resignation of Al Gordon, vice president for store development at Megafoods.
The position has been eliminated, Jack J. Walker, chief financial officer of Megafoods, said. This will add to the cost savings Megafoods is seeking in its review of corporate organization and staffing, Walker said.
Sutton Appoints Operating Chief
ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Sutton Place Gourmet here has named Max McComb president and chief operating officer.
McComb assumes some of the duties of Mark Berey, who had been president, chief operating officer and chief executive officer titles.
Berey continues as CEO of the group of six upscale specialty food stores. He will focus his efforts on developing new-store opportunities for Sutton Place. McComb continues to report to Berey.
McComb joined Sutton Place in January as executive vice president of operations. He has more than 27 years' experience in retail food operations and previously was vice president and general manager of the 44-store northern region of Shaw's Supermarkets, East Bridgewater, Mass.
As reported, Sutton Place Gourmet has said it will use the financial backing of Catterton-Simon Partners, a private investment group based in Bethesda, Md., to help in its expansion effort. The retailer wants to at least double the its current number of stores within the next several years.
Laurel Adds Operating Chief
LONDON, Ky. -- Ed Horn has been named senior vice president and chief operating officer, a new position, for Laurel Grocery Co. here.
He reports to Bruce Chesnut, Laurel's president and chief executive officer.
Laurel is a wholesaler serving more than 300 customers, including 200 supermarkets and 120 convenience stores in Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, West Virginia and Indiana. Its sales in 1993 were approximately $116 million.
Horn was president and chief operating officer of Affiliated Foods, Lexington, Ky., a subsidiary of Super Food Services, Miamisburg, Ohio.
Jim Young succeeds Horn at Affiliated, with the title of vice president and general manager.
Young's previous title with Super Food was vice president and general manager of the Orlando, Fla., division. The division discontinued operations in 1992, after a deal to sell the facility to Albertson's, Boise, Idaho, fell through.
Winn-Dixie Board Names North
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Winn-Dixie Stores here has named Julia B. North to its board.
North is vice president of consumer services in the Atlanta office of BellSouth Telecommunications division of BellSouth Corp. Her appointment increases Winn-Dixie's board to 12 directors.
