New President at Harris Teeter

Corp. here said last week Fred J. Morganthall 2nd has taken over as president of 139-unit Harris Teeter here.

Morganthall, 45, succeeds Edward S. Dunn Jr., 54, who said in June he would step down as president at the end of October but would remain with Harris Teeter as a consultant until he retires next spring. Dunn joined the chain as controller in 1974 and has been president since 1989.

Morganthall was executive vice president of Harris Teeter when he was designated in June as Dunn's successor. He joined the company in 1986 as director of grocery merchandising and subsequently held positions overseeing merchandising, distribution, operations and real estate.

Executive VP Slot Added by Wegmans

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Wegmans Food Markets here said Robert J. Hughes has been appointed executive vice president, a new post. He had been vice president of operations since 1980.

Hughes, 61, joined the chain at age 16 and became a full-time employee in 1954. Prior to becoming vice president, he was district manager for 13 years and a store manager at two Wegmans units.

As executive vice president, Hughes takes on the added responsibilities of overseeing merchandising, distribution, electronic banking and Shoppers Club for Business, the company's frequent-shopper program that targets business customers.

Hughes reports to Danny Wegman, president.

Food Lion Names Two VPs

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Food Lion here has named Natalie Taylor vice president of diversity and Darrell Johnson vice president of human resources. They both report to Bill McCanless, senior vice president and chief administrative officer.

Taylor, a 16-year Food Lion veteran, was most recently director of diversity planning. She moves into a new position.

Johnson joined Food Lion in 1985 and was most recently director of human resources, compensation and administration. He succeeds Gene McKinley, who is now special projects executive until he retires, following 20 years with the company.

The company said Pat Fulcher, formerly payroll manager, has been named director of employee administration, a new position, and James Mack has been named director of human resources, succeeding Johnson. Mack was most recently human resources manager for Food Lion's 180 stores in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Fulcher and Mack report to Johnson.

Two Appointments Made by Supervalu

MINNEAPOLIS -- Supervalu here has announced two executive appointments following the departure of corporate secretary Teri Johnson.

John Breedlove has been named corporate secretary. For the past two years, he has been group counsel for the company's Retail Food group. He has also represented Supervalu's Hazelwood Farms Bakeries and Save-A-Lot subsidiaries.

Bill McDonald has been named assistant secretary, a new post. McDonald was corporate attorney since joining Supervalu in 1994.

Breedlove reports to Dave Boehnen, executive vice president.

McDonald reports to Steve Kilgriff, associate general counsel.
