Safeway, Pleasanton, Calif., said Robert H. Henry has been appointed president of the company's Denver division. He succeeds John A. King, who is retiring after 44 years with the company. Henry most recently served as president of Safeway's Portland (Ore.) division. Safeway also said it has named Lyle A. Waterman president of its Portland (Ore.) division, succeeding Henry. Waterman was vice president of marketing operations for the company's Seattle division.

inted Thomas C. Berg to the new position of director of marketing services. Berg was Spartan's director of corporate brands. Spartan also said it has named Kenneth A. Kurzyniec to the position of director of corporate brands. He was supervisor of private-label sales.

BAAN CO., Barnveld, Netherlands, said last week it has named Pierre Everaert, an executive with extensive food-retailing experience, interim chief executive officer while the business technology company searches for a permanent CEO. Everaert, who will step down from his current position as Baan's chairman, succeeds Mary Coleman, who resigned to pursue other technology-related opportunities closer to her California home. Previously, Everaert was CEO of Ahold USA, Chantilly, Va., and president and CEO of Ahold, Zaandam, Netherlands.

General Merchandise Distributors Council, Colorado Springs, Colo., said it has named David T. McConnell Jr. president and chief executive officer. McConnell succeeds Richard W. Tilton, who is retiring. McConnell has been with the association since 1980 and has served as senior vice president for the past four years.
